The first electric scooter was available to the public in 1996 but it wasn’t until 2018 when these devices rose to popularity.  In August of that year, the arrival of e-scooters in Louisville won the hearts of over 400,000 users, taking Lime and Bird out for a spin.  Since then, similar companies released their designs of an electric scooters, and brands like Jump, Lyft, Spin, HOPR, and Bolt were born.

With this trend among residents and even tourists, electric scooters have the potential to replace conventional vehicles and become the main mode of transportation in cities like Louisville.  The idea of scooter-dominated roads left urbanists and urban planners alike pondering about the pros and cons of such means of transport.

What’s more, with global warming and the ongoing pressure of climate change, debates are emerging whether these electric scooters are essentially eco-friendly.

A Better Ride for Short Distances

In a census from city-data, a scooter can cover an average distance range of .66 miles from August 2018 to July of 2019.  The median of which was 1.19 miles. The question is: Is this enough to transition from personal vehicles to electric scooters?

To draw people to use electric scooters would pose an immense challenge for green environment advocates as these individuals confined themselves to the use of their vehicles.  This did not spare those who commute using bicycles given that most roads have designs to accommodate cars rather than pedal-driven vehicles.

The Electric Scooter Benefits the City

To get them to their destinations, by way of car or preferred transportation, there are options made available for commuters.  However, they have to put matters such as those that generate less traffic or contribute minimal pollution into consideration.

This concept poses no problems for tourists, especially when they want to make the most of their holiday and maximize sightseeing as much as possible.  Taking a ride on an electric scooter might be the best possible answer.

That being said, e-scooters can do only as much as take them on short-distance trips, conserving fossil fuels as in the case of cars.  Additionally, e-scooters have the advantage of maneuverability through narrow passageways. This can consequently bring its riders to their destinations in a shorter time.

Solution for the Last Mile Problem

Outside the limits of the city, the last mile problem remains one of the major issues for urban planners.  With e-scooters, it may very well serve as an ideal solution for this movement, especially for short mean distances. 

The last mile is a term used to describe the concluding section of the delivery of commodities and commuters from a transportation hub to its final stop.  The usual route of buses typically ends in areas where there are few to none sidewalk systems.  This is where e-scooters come in. Despite its boom, e-scooters received quite a handful of negative criticisms, to the extent that some of the vehicles suffered vandalism.  This is not the first time.  From brakes being cut to scooters being thrown into the river or being set on fire, numerous other similar cases happened across states. 

One of the reasons for these destructive acts is due to the poor handling of their owners.  Individuals blatantly expressed their disdain towards the vehicles for improper parking in the middle of sidewalks or even obstructing ramps designated for disabled patients.

 Electric Scooters are Eco-Friendly

One of the best features of e-scooters is its sustainability.  While these vehicles herald for being more eco-friendly than cars, some studies reported that they are not entirely green.

Electric scooters require regular charging and transferring them to charge hubs can increase their lifetime emissions.  Gas-powered vehicles usually gather the scooters and return them to private garages to put them back up at a certain location the next morning.

Lime data published that each car trip is equal to one of three scooter trips.  Moreover, both Lime and Bird are developing ways to counterpoise the emissions discharged by their fleet, and this includes pick-up vehicles.

The E-Rides are for the People

The Xootr Roma is the lightest, fastest, and most compact kick scooter from Xootr, based in Scranton, Pennsylvania, USA. With its wooden deck and steel frame design, the Goped Knowped is perhaps the strongest adult kick scooter in the market. It is able to support a maximum load of up to 400 lbs (180 kg), and its pair of 150mm wide, solid rubber wheels, which will never go flat, offers comfort whenever you drive over bumps and uneven ground and better grip on the ground (but at the cost of speed). Its broader deck gives you more room to rest your feet on. It has two brakes for safety and great control.

What’s great about the Kleefer Pure-180 is its foldability, which takes just as little effort. Thanks to the scooter’s patented system, no bending necessary. You just need to give the locking pedal a little kick, slightly tilt the handlebar, and watch the deck automatically fold up in a second. The Kleefer Pure-180 is ultra compact and rigid when folded, and it is no bigger than an umbrella. To unfold, just hold the handlebar, pull the deck rearwards, and let the cylinders do the rest.

The Public Health Transportation Departments in Austin, Texas made a study concerning electric scooter related injuries in coordination with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The research resulted in the identification of 271 e-scooter related injuries from September 5 to November 30, 2018. The department presented the study to the CDC in Atlanta, Georgia at the Epidemic Intelligence Service Conference.

The study documented 182,333 e-scooter hours used with an equivalent of 891,121 miles travelled by the vehicles or 936,110 trips made by these machines. Records showed that 20 people sustained injuries per 100,000 trips on e-scooters in the 3-month study. Of the 20 accidents that happened to e-scooter riders, 10 people suffered head injuries. These injuries could have been prevented by a safety precaution of wearing a helmet. The study further revealed that only one of the 190 electric scooter riders use the protective helmet.

According to the National Association of City Transportation Officials in the US, there were 38.5 million trips rode or shared on electric scooters across urban cities in America in 2018. The study did not have a death incident documented but there are some reports of deaths while riding an e-scooter around the country. The interviews revealed that 55% met their accidents on the streets while 33% were on the sidewalk. Of the accidents that occured, cars or other vehicles caused the incident at 16% while 37% blamed overspeeding to be the cause of their crash. Injuries tallied at 16% of the car-related accidents but only 10 % actually crashed with a car. The other injured riders consist of 10% hitting a curb and 7% hit street structures such as a pole or a manhole cover.

Further interviews saw that ⅓ of the injured respondents consumed alcohol in a span of 12 hours before the incident; 37% pointed to overspeeding on the e-scooter and a surprising 19% had injuries from falling caused by non-working brakes and wheels malfunctions. Other injuries were due to distracted driving because of using the phone and another with earphones on listening to music.

Another perception of the causes of accidents happening is during night-time driving. On the contrary, only 39% of the injuries happened during the night with the inclusive time from 6 PM to 6 AM. Morning and evening rush hours took 20% of the accidents with an additional 22% occuring during working hours.

It is not surprising that the reports issued by the department showed that one third of the injuries on electric scooters are with first time riders. E-scooter companies require first time riders to swipe on a tutorial on safety precautions before hopping on the vehicle. Authors say that the download of safety precautions on electric scooters is not enough in getting ready to scoot at 20 mph speeds down the road for novice riders. The injured number to 70% saying that they read the downloaded safety warnings before they rode the e-scooter while 60% say that the safety training came after their injuries happened.

Electric Scooters Legalization in London: Electric scooters would be allowed to use cycle lanes in London as cycling campaigners push for its legalization on the streets. The government is currently investigating how to legalize them.

A report by the London Cycling Campaign said e-bikes, e-scooters and e-cargo bikes should all be welcomed and could have a key role in a greener future for the city post-lockdown. But the London Cycling Campaign said that e-scooters, which are illegal to ride on public roads, should not be allowed on pavements. In the lack of a comprehensive network of segregated lanes, they should be equal to cyclists in terms of being able to use the road.

The consultation is an effort by the government to work out the different kinds of regulations that would be applied to e-scooters and their riders, which caused injuries in places where they are legal. The government wants to establish minimum vehicle requirements, and is also taking into account whether to require riders to wear helmets, carry a license, or have insurance. There are also questions about whether scooters should be allowed to be ridden on pavements or in cycle lanes.

It said that a more equitable distribution of road space was required for a humane city.

The huge number of e-scooter trips worldwide shows that it was not a fad. Global data suggests that the biggest shift to e-scooters is more likely from car drivers (36%) and pedestrians (37%), with a lower shift from public transport (13%) and cycling (9%).

E-scooter riders have the liking as cyclists: low-speed streets and segregated lanes. “Increase in the use of cycle tracks by e-scooter users would increase the pressure on transport authorities to provide the proper protected space for micro mobility users which would also include those cycling, and these forms could all be far more space efficient and safer than driving cars,” the report stated.

Gareth Powell, the TfL road chief, told yesterday’s TfL board meeting: “We have been concerned about the safety of e-scooters and they would remain illegal on London and national roads at present.

“The Department for Transport will bring forward a series of trials for rental e-scooters, which is not for private individuals to go, but them, and use them on the roads. They are discussing how that might apply.
