  • Where Society Has Failed the Disabled – Electric Scooter

Mobility scooters have long since provided a viable alternative to short-distance transportation for elderly, obese, and disabled individuals. They are powerful enough to carry between 300 to 400 pounds while being energy efficient and environmentally friendly.

While we have built our society on the values of equality among all Americans, the elderly and disabled have often been left behind. Moving up flights of stairs, opening doors, and stepping onto bus platforms are easy tasks that we take for granted. However, for many disabled people, these mundane actions can be difficult, if not downright impossible.

Unfortunately, society’s infrastructure is not doing a good job of keeping up with the demands of the elderly and disabled. Traveling around town can be quite frustrating for individuals who depend on mobility scooters and wheelchairs as a means of transportation, as many cities in the United States do not meet the standards required to accommodate such citizens. Because of this lack of city planning, disabled and elderly men and women are at a higher risk of accident-related injury. Pedestrians who rely on wheelchairs as their means of transportation were found to be 36% more likely to be killed by a car than any other type of pedestrian.

Many cities across the United States are making an effort to remedy this problem by installing ramps and sensory devices throughout the city. While this is a great start, the process of making a city disability friendly will take time. Until then, mobility scooters provide a great alternative for men and women with trouble walking.

    Mobility Scooter

The Mobility Scooter is an excellent choice for individuals with mobility issues. It is easy to maneuver, meaning you can ride around supermarkets and shopping centers without a problem. It goes 9.5 miles-per-hour and is able to maintain a charge for 35 miles of use. Since it is able to carry as much as 400 pounds of weight, it is a great scooter for heavy people as well the elderly and disabled.

Drive Medical Maverick 3-Wheel Mobility Scooter

If power is what you are looking for the Drive Medical Maverick 3-Wheel Mobility Scooter is the perfect fit for you. It is strong enough to ride through dirt, gravel, rocks, and bumpy terrain. While it does not have the capacity to climb stairs, it does have the power necessary to go on surfaces that a wheelchair has trouble accessing.

    H2 Wheelchair

If you are not a fan of mobility scooters, and enjoy the feeling and comfort of a wheelchair, then the Power Wheelchair might be the right fit for you.

Heartway USA Sahara KX Power Wheelchair

The Sahara KX is a motorized, all-terrain wheelchair that is capable of riding on rough and uneven surfaces. Its thick tires and engine power, which is strong enough to support 450 pounds of weight, make it excellent for hills and rocky trails. While it is not as fast as most mobility scooters, reaching slightly over 6 miles-per-hour, the Sahara KX Power Wheelchair comes with comfort and maneuverability that that isn’t offered by most mobility scooters.

Motorized wheelchairs and mobility scooters are proving to be an excellent way to help people move around the city. As cities begin to implement services that accommodate disabled and elderly citizens, these machines will play a crucial role in helping wheelchair and scooter users move around as easily as the rest of us.

Buyer’s Guide: Best Electric Scooters For College Students

Here is a buying guide on different aspects and features you should consider when purchasing an electric scooter for college students.

    Power

Electric scooters will make your travel to college and within the college campus relatively smooth and easy. Most electric scooters designed with college students in mind come with powerful motors that can generate 250 watts to 1000 watts of power.

This implies that the scooter can easily hit a speed between 15 mph and even 40 mph (however, street legal scooters cannot go beyond 25mph in most states, so there are speed controllers installed in them). If your electric scooter has a powerful battery, it can even ride the steep hills with ease.

    Weight Capacity

Another feature to look for when seeking a perfect electric scooter for college students is the weight that it can carry. If the scooter cannot have enough weight, there is a danger of it toppling over. Thus, it is essential to know about the load capacity of the electric scooter before purchasing. Most of the electric scooters designed for college students can easily carry a weight of about 250 lbs.

    Portability

You may not have a lot of space in the parking lot at college. Also, you might need to move around from one building to another quickly. In such cases, having a lightweight, portable scooter becomes important. Scooters that can fold are easy to carry when you need to hop from a lecture building to the library.

    Tires

The tires of the electric scooter can impact the way the scooter will ride on different terrains. There are two types of tires used in electric scooters. One is airless or rubber tires, and the second is air-filled tires. The airless tires require low maintenance, and there are significantly fewer chances of puncture with these. However, they do not perform well on bumpy roads. On the other hand, air-filled tires are adequate for shock absorption but are prone to punctures.

    Range

Last but not least, the range is also an essential feature to consider when purchasing an electric scooter. Scope defines the distance that an electric scooter can travel before the subsequent charging. The majority of the electric scooters offer an average range of 20 miles. However, some high-performance models can travel up to 40 miles in one charge. Also, it is essential to consider the time it will take to charge the scooter.

    Safety Features

It is important to have features such as headlights, taillights, dual brakes, and knobby tires so that the college-goer is safe from accidents while enjoying their scooter.

  • Ninebot boosting electric scooter market with Segway acquisition – Electric Scooter

Ever heard of the Segway electric scooter? If you haven’t, then it’s alright. Anyway, no one would want to hear about a failed brand or product, would they? And if you are an electronic buff, you might have read about it, but never had the chance to drive it because it was way too pricey. Only the rich and famous can afford what appears to be the pioneer personal electronic vehicle. Moreover, the Segway electric scooter was never developed for the mass market, but for military, security, and corporate applications. If you have ever been to a mall, you could have seen one of those oversized security guards roaming on a Segway. And you may not know it, but the Segway inspired the development of the more popular hoverboard.

The Segway electric scooter was invented and founded by Dean Kamen 15 years ago, and the brand name would become synonymous with any self-balancing gyroscopic gadget. The original electric, two-wheeled, self-balancing personal transporter made its debut in 2001 with much fanfare, but never received the commercial and critical acclaim it hoped for. What was once hyped as the “future of transportation” was named as one of the 50 Worst Inventions by the Time magazine. Segway was a subject of ridicule by the American public, but for some tech companies, it was a technology worth duplicating and tinkering with – something they could sell to the masses.

Enter Ninebot, Segway’s first real competitor

Every pioneer technology would inspire imitations or copycats, with each one of them claiming to be cheaper and far better than the original. The technology behind Segway electric scooters was one of its kind during its time. Ten years after Segway’s debut, not a few tech companies have copied the technology and released their own versions of self-balancing scooters, including hoverboards. One such company was the China-based Ninebot, established in 2012. Ninebot released a model that was beautifully designed and somewhat resembled the Segway scooter with regards to level of ride technology and built quality, but only at less than half the price.

Segway, of course, was not happy. It felt threatened by a rival business, and was alarmed that the Chinese upstart could wipe out its share in the electric scooter market and eventually erode its brand. The US company accused Ninebot, plus other Chinese companies, of infringing its patents since their scooters do resemble one another. Unable to come up with a better response to the competition, Segway filed a trade complaint. The Chinese company vehemently denied the accusation, insisting that it independently own its intellectual property.

    Ninebot purchases Segway

In a twist to the tussle between the two companies, a development that the personal electric vehicle industry did not expect: Ninebot purchased the struggling Segway for an undisclosed sum in April 2015, just seven months after the latter filed a trade complaint against the former. Prior to the acquisition by Ninebot, the company was sold twice to investors, due to limited success. The first was in 2009, to a British entrepreneur Jimi Heselden who died in an ironic yet tragic Segway crash in 2010, and the second, in 2013, to Summit Strategic Investments whose project to “refocus” the company was never completed.

The acquisition of Segway (the original) by Ninebot (the clone) was made possible with funding from investors. The Chinese electric scooter manufacturer received a combined $80 million investment from Chinese smart-phone company Xiaomi and three venture capital firms namely Sequoia Capital, Shunwei Capital, and WestSummit Capital. Ninebot did not mention how much of the investment money went towards the said acquisition.

But why purchase Segway? Ninebot wanted to end not only its copyright feud with the American company, but also a larger controversy that is hounding China, its base country, for too long: Copycat China or in other words, the country’s widespread pattern of copyright infringement. Well, it is no secret that counterfeit markets abound in China, which manufacturing industry values imitation over innovation, and even shamelessly export them to other countries. By purchasing Segway, Ninebot is helping China clean up its reputation and expand though its own innovations. Purchasing other companies is just one way for China to solve its copycat problem.

But why Segway? Ninebot co-founder Wang Ye admitted in an interview that his company bought Segway for the patents. Ninbot is stronger than Segway, but it is still young and cannot apply for many patents. Segway, on the other hand, already has the core patents for self-balancing vehicles, so purchasing the company will help Ninebot with their own patents, plus expand its product portfolio. The acquisition also had to do with branding, since Segway is synonymous with self-balancing electric scooters. Its brand visibility in US and Europe made it a wise purchase.

Big and rich companies buy small and poor companies all the time. The acquisition, however, did not mean the end of the long-suffering American company. Segway will not close shop. As a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ninebot, it will still operate as a separate brand with its own products. The two companies are united under a strategic alliance of sorts, with the purpose of inventing smarter and greener short-distance vehicles. Ninebot will continue to offer high quality electric scooters at a much lower price. As for Segway, the alliance with Ninebot with further enable them to develop more intelligent and valuable products for their customers. What could be the best term to describe the relationship between the two companies? Sibling rivalry, that is.

What does it mean for the electric scooter market?

What an awkward and intriguing development! This has resulted to an interesting and ironic business deal. The acquisition of Segway by Ninebot will help boost the self-balancing electric scooter market. Rather than to scare off potential competitors, the acquisition will help spur competitiveness and excellence in the personal electric vehicle industry. This will motivate manufacturers to roll out high quality personal transporters with upgrades and more cool features. Thanks to the entry of Ninebot, self-balancing scooters have truly become a consumer electronic product.

What does it mean for China?

As for China, the acquisition will mean many things:

    • Ninebot’s financial backer Xiaomi is China’s answer to Silicon Valley’s Apple which is now investing in an electric car. By placing Ninebot under its umbrella (or ecosystem), Xiaomi is already one step ahead of Apple in the electric vehicle game. Xiaomi looks to conquer all hardware media platforms in mobile, TV, and now smart vehicles.
    • China is the world’s largest market for two-wheeled vehicles, and it already has a manufacturing base that can serve the self-balancing electric scooter market. India, the second largest market, imports components for their electric scooters and motorcycles from China.
    • China may excel in the self-balancing scooter department since Segway is already a hit there. Chinese consumers have taken to the technology more than the Americans do.
    • Beijing and other large cities in China top the list of most congested and polluted metropolitan areas in the world. Mass adoption of smaller-sized electric vehicles like self-balancing scooters may help ease traffic woes and save parking space. Moreover, the mass adoption of self-balancing electric scooters will help boost the electrification of transportation in China. As mentioned earlier, finally an end to China’s copycat problem. Xiaomi and Ninebot will help China’s manufacturing industry expand through innovation and acquisition.

Tech industry observers will not know how long Segway would stay in the self-balancing scooter game. Though it still can operate as an entity separate from Ninebot, its future is uncertain, but who knows what it holds? Ninebot and Xiaomi may decide to cease Segway’s operations one day, claim its technologies, and use them for their own ends. But one thing is for sure: The self-balancing scooter market is just heating up, and it could be the next big thing in electric mobility.

  • India goes green with Electric Ecooters – Electric Scooter

Electric scooters are to India as electric cars are to the United States. Because scooters are the most popular types of vehicles in the South Asian subcontinent, it is evident that electric mobility and the green revolution would be carried out through this popular vehicle type. Electric scooters will help usher in the electrification of transportation in the world’s second most populous nation. India is sure to lead that department and even own the scooter sector, amidst the sea of challenges, thanks to the innovative and entrepreneurial spirit of its homegrown talents.

Electric vehicle sales up in India

The fledgling Indian electric vehicle industry is experiencing some growth during the previous fiscal year. Sales of electric vehicles, both two-wheelers and four-wheelers, went up by 37.5%, with 22,000 units sold in the fiscal year 2015-2016, which concluded on March 31 this year. The fiscal year 2014-2015 saw 16,000 units sold. According to figures released by the Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (SMEV), 20,000 of the electric units sold were two-wheelers, while 2,000 were four-wheelers. India is the second largest market for two-wheelers after China.

21,000 electric vehicles (18,000 of which are hybrids) were sold between April and December 2015 alone, compared to 7,000-8,000 April and December 2014. Though this is an improvement, current figures pale in comparison to that of 2011-2012 which saw 130,000 electric units sold. This is even a disappointment as the electric vehicle industry have failed to reach the sales target of 35,000 units by the end of March 2016.  India still has a very long way to go in achieving the target of 7 million electric vehicles on the road by 2020.

Government initiatives to boost electric vehicle sales

The current electric vehicle market may be small, but it is surely an attractive one. Following the steps of Europe and the United States, India is empowering the market with their own schemes and incentives. The Indian government is actively promoting the mass adoption of electric scooters and other electric vehicles by offering potential buyers various incentives.

The government’s main scheme is the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan or NEMMP 2020. Under this plan, the government aims to mitigate the adverse impacts of vehicles that run on oil-based fuels and to enhance national energy security. Just like any other developing country, India is suffering from excessive pollution brought by the burning of coal and the use of petroleum by vehicles. The subcontinent is one of the largest energy consumers and importers of oil and petroleum products in the world. To tackle global climate change, India is encouraging the use of renewable and sustainable energy sources, and promoting the use of electric vehicles is part of NEMMP 2020, which expects the industry to sell 5 million electric units per year in the span of six years.

Part of the NEMMP 2020 is the scheme Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles in India or FAME India. Under this scheme, the government will incentivize the purchase of electric and hybrid vehicles, offering up to Rs 29,000 ($430) for scooters and motorcycles and up to Rs 1.38 lakh ($1,500) for cars. Battery-operated two-wheelers can receive between Rs 1,800 ($27) to Rs 29,000 ($430), depending on their technology.

Local companies get into the electric scooter game

The Indian government has played a vital role in the promotion of electric vehicles, most especially electric scooters. The incentives they are offering is more than enough, and much of it has not even been utilized. Auto manufacturers should get into the game, and good thing the locals are more than happy to play their part.

Established companies and start-ups are shaping the electric scooter market. Multinational auto manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra is investing vast resources on its two-wheelers and is looking to expand its product portfolio and establish research centers worldwide. The company is banking on government subsidy, a factor which will help them price their units better. The company suffered with their flagship two-seater electric car Reva and have delayed the launch of their four-seater unit as they are expecting the government to roll out incentives.

Electric scooter manufacturer Hero Electric saw the air pollution situation as a great opportunity to promote their scooters. They had rolled out a fleet of 100 electric scooters to offer free rides to the riding public.

Thanks to funds from investors, start-up Ather Energy is developing a prototype of a smart electric scooter that will run a top speed of 75 km/h and take less than an hour to charge – better features than a typical electric scooter than runs 25 km/h and takes eight hours to charge. The Ather scooter will be 20% lighter than its petroleum-powered counterpart. Like any other electric vehicle, it will operate on a lithium-ion battery pack. The Ather scooter will feature different driving modes, navigation (Google Maps using GPRS or GPS on an Android dashboard), and even smartphone connectivity, and its developers are looking to incorporate real-time traffic data, sensors, and other software that will allow riders the benefit of riding an intelligent vehicle.

Other players in the electric scooter game also include Tork Motors, Electrotherm (India) Ltd, EKO, TVS, BSA Motors, and Terra Motors. They are all doing their share of the electrification of transportation, which will start with scooters.

Challenges of the Indian electric scooter industry

Any large and developing (or well-developed) country that is pursuing a mass adoption of electric vehicles is not without a few challenges, and India is no exemption. For one, India is grappling with the lack of awareness among the populace. According to SMEV director and CEO of Hero Electric Sohindeer Gill, only 30% of customers in India are aware about electric vehicles, and people are not even aware of the incentives available. The lack of awareness of electric vehicles among commuters and in the workplace has caused the very slow offtake of electric vehicles, and thus the lack of market. Government should conduct large-scale awareness programs if it aims to meet its ambitious target of 7 million by 2020.

Another pressing issue is the lack of charging stations. Without adequate charging infrastructure, people will not have a reliable option for switching to electric vehicles, particularly electric scooters. As private businesses do not provide such facility and petrol station are hesitant about putting up charging points, government should lead the charge. As most houses in key Indian cities are multi-storeyed, it should consider building charging stations at the most convenient locations, such as parking lots, marketplaces, community centers, and dedicated lanes, and at regular distance.

Like electric cars in the US, electric scooters in India also suffer from price stigma. Most scooter and motorcycle owners belong to the middle class. Being one of the most cost-sensitive consumers in the world, Indians will consider the economical aspects of purchasing a new technology such as an electric scooter. And as there is the issue of range, they would not purchase a vehicle that registers a limited range. Government can address this with incentives and adequate charging facilities. On their part, engineers need to develop units that boast of better mileage and tweak existing battery technology.

There is also the challenge of 100% localization. Electric scooter makers are partnering with foreign auto manufacturers to learn about their technology so they can apply it in India. Mahindra & Mahindra, Ather Energy, and Tork Motors are aiming for scooters that is 100% “Made in India”. But for this to happen, India should stop sourcing parts and components from abroad, especially China, and engineers and other professionals in the automotive industry should focus on design thinking and own intellectual property in design and software in order to make India a product nation. This will even help improve the quality of Indian electric scooters as parts are manufactured and assembled right in the base country.

  • 6 Questions to Ask About Self-balancing Hoverboards – Electric Scooter

Self-balancing hoverboards, popularly known as hoverboards, are the face of intelligent transportation: Intuitive and hands-free. Personal transporters have caught up with electric cars and e-bikes when it comes to electric mobility and digital connectivity.

Since their debut as the “Segways” without the handlebars, hoverboards have proven themselves to be a smarter and far more exciting ride. Who would not have guessed that they are the first to go both “smart” and hand-free ahead conventional four-wheel drives. (One car maker is currently perfecting a self-driving car that features autopilot technology.)

But despite its commercial success, hoverboards get mixed reviews on safety. There have been numerous fire and explosion incidents caused by defective units in family homes. And like consumer electronics, hoverboards are not spared from the work of counterfeiters. As hoverboards get more popular, knockoffs from China flood the market.

Confusingly, many of the fakes look flashy and classy, almost like the authentic ones, but the difference lies in the quality of components used, and that is where many consumers find it hard to differentiate between authentic and fake brands. For safety and quality reasons, many department stores and online retailers stopped selling them for quite some time. Amazon once again made self-balancing electric hoverboards available on their site, but only the ones that hopefully will not explode.

You may be one of those consumers wary about buying a hoverboard. You have a need for it, and your need is genuine, but so if your doubt and concern. You have questions, and you want them answered before you decide to buy one of those popular self-balancing electric hoverboards in the market.

    1. Why do some hoverboards catch fire?

Whenever a hoverboard fire or explosion occur, news reports are quick to point to the battery as the main culprit – and they are right. Blame it on the counterfeiters. They use low quality or substandard lithium-ion batteries that lack overcharge protection. Batteries without overcharge protection can cause hoverboards to overheat and explode.

Some self-balancing hoverboards come with batteries that lack a suitable separator. Lithium-ion batteries use a metal separator to keep the positive and negative electrolytes apart in order to prevent short circuit. A short circuit can cause a lithium-ion battery pack to heat up quickly, leading to a fire.

How can you avoid such a disaster? Go with self-balancing hoverboards that use a genuine Samsung or LG battery rather than an unbranded battery or cheap knockoff brand. The battery should bear not only safety instructions, but also safety certification marks such as UL and CE.

    2. How long does it take to charge a hoverboard?

Good thing you ask this question. Unlike laptops and smartphones, self-balancing hoverboards do not have the mechanism that shuts down the flow of electricity once fully charged. And unlike electric cars and e-bikes, you cannot leave a charging hoverboard unattended overnight. Good thing most hoverboards take up only 1 to 2 hours to charge.

Reminder: When charging a hoverboard, never leave them unattended. Do not overcharge. Always follow the manufacturer’s recommended charging time.

    3. Is it suitable for children?

Or to rephrase the question, should parents buy one for their kids? Self-balancing hoverboards are recommended for ages 12 and up, but they may be suitable for younger children as long as they can control it safely – and only use under parent supervision. If you are a parent, you should know that hoverboards travel fast. If used incorrectly, they can be dangerous to both adults and kids, who may accidentally fall out and injure themselves.

Before you let your child use a hoverboard, read the user manual first so you can instruct your child on how to use it safely. Better yet, consider hoverboards that are specially designed for children or models that come with safety features.

    4. How much does a hoverboard cost?

It depends on the brand or retailer. Prices can range anywhere from $200 to over $1,500. Some brands that sell for $200 look exactly the same as the ones that sell for $1,500. It may be no secret to you that counterfeit brands are cheaper than the authentic or branded ones. Mostly coming from China, these counterfeit hoverboards are made of cheaper (but less durable and more dangerous) materials, use non-branded (and less powerful) batteries, and do not offer a warranty or after-sales service.

Money advice: You should be able to get a good quality hoverboard for around $400-$600. Avoid hoverboards that cost below $300. If you are brand-conscious, you can opt for high end hoverboards that retail for $1,500 plus. Heavy on the pocket, but it will be worth the investment since you will be enjoying a durable and safe product, plus warranty and after-sales service. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for.

Moreover, check if the manufacturer or retailer offers any kind of money-back guarantee. If you do not like the hoverboard you have bought, you could at least return it and buy a new one.

    5. Where to buy affordable quality hoverboards?

Browse online marketplaces like Amazon and Alibaba for the most budget-friendly boards. It should be now safe to shop for a hoverboard at Amazon, which is now making sure they sell only units that will not explode. You should also check the manufacturer websites. Brands like PhunkeeDuck, IO Hawk, Swagway, and Razor even sell hoverboards from their own online shops – and even offer great discounts to online shoppers. Online purchase is your only choice, since most major retailers like Walmart and Target stopped selling hoverboards, but if you are wary about online purchase, best check your nearest department store.

If you decide to buy via Amazon or any online marketplace, here is a checklist for a safe, secured, and worry-free online purchase:

    • Search for reviews of the product and the seller/manufacturer. What are online customers saying about them?
    • Check their website. Is it professionally designed and user-friendly? Are there lots of misspellings or grammar errors? Does it have a privacy policy page? Does it have complete contact details, including an address of the manufacturer’s physical office and valid email address (not Yahoo or Gmail)?
    • Check the website’s online portal and try to make an order. Does the checkout or shopping cart come with online security or merchant verification seals such as Comodo Secure, Authorize.net Verified Merchant, McAfee Secure, and TRUSTe Privacy? Is online payment done via PayPal, Visa, MasterCard, or American Express?
    • Check the web address. Is there a letter ‘s’ at the end of the ‘http’ part or a padlock symbol in the task bar? This means the website uses an encrypted system to protect online shoppers’ personal and credit card details.

    6. How to check the quality of hoverboards?

Hoverboards now come with a UL Mark, the single most accepted certification mark in the US. The Underwriter Laboratories (UL) is an international safety consulting and certification company that tests, inspects, certifies, and validates billions of consumer products, including electronics, annually. The UL has introduced UL 2272, the new certification for hoverboards.

Tip: Make sure your hoverboard is UL certified. Look for the rectangular-sized holographic certification label for self-balancing hoverboards on the bottom of the product and the UL mark on the front of the packaging. The mark and the label indicate you have a genuine UL certified hoverboard.

There is no other tech that is facing a lot of scrutiny than the hoverboard. Purely electric, emission-free, and lightweight, these self-balancing hover boards are vehicles with great potential as a transportation alternative. Like every piece of technology, they are a work in progress, and it is likely that future products will be better and safer than today’s makes.

  • What’s in a Name? – Electric Bicycles vs. Electric Scooters vs. Mopeds – Electric Scooter

Names of electric vehicles can all be confusing even when it comes to electric scooters, electric mopeds, and electric bicycles. But, you may be wondering – aren’t these all synonyms? While many people still tend to use the terms interchangeably, it would be interesting to know the technically correct term in describing each of them. The truth is – you may be calling your ride an electric bicycle when it fact it is  a moped. You could possibly be praying for an electric scooter when what you have in mind is actually an e-bike. Today, let’s go back to the basics and brush up on electric vehicle vocabulary.

To clear out the confusion, it is necessary to understand that these electric vehicles are different in so many areas – from the basic functions, riding style, the benefits, and even to the legal requirements of owning and using them.   While they may appear quite similar or can simply be categorized as a two-wheeled or three-wheeled electric vehicles,  you may be surprised that there ae several factors that one must consider before the ride can be classified as a bike, scooter, or moped. The difference may also be dependent on how a particular state define each of them. Hopefully, by the end of this article, you will be able to call your own accurately. Let’s go check the meanings!

The General Description of  Electric Bicycles

The electric bicycles  or e-bikes is basically a bicycle that has an integrated electric motor which the rider can use for propulsion. While there are different types of electric bicycles, one common feature is the integrated small motor which is intended to assist the rider’s pedal power. These e-bikes are also often referred to as pedelecs. These electric bicycles , regardless of how powerful the motor installed in them, leaves the ability for the vehicle to be pedaled by the user.   The presence of this ability is what essentially makes it a  bicycle, and not a moped or scooter.

Most electric bicycles are equipped with lithium-ion batteries that are rechargeable. While there are e-bikes with the speed of less than 20 mph,  the typical speed of electric bikes is usually within the range of  16 mph to 20 mph (25 kph to 32 kph). The speed of the e-bikes and its overall usage are dependent on the specific regulations of the country or state. For instance, electric bicycles in the UK is legal as long as the rider is at least 14 years old. In  Canada, the UK, and the US, licensing is not required to use the bikes. In the members of European Union, they have implemented a comprehensive legislation on the safety and use of the electric-pedaled assisted cycles (EPAC).

The General Description of  Electric Scooters

Electric scooters are plug-in vehicles which are powered by electric motor. They may either hand two wheels or three wheels. The power comes from a rechargeable battery pack system which drives the motor/s installed in it. Electric scooters generally have step through frames. One distinct difference between a scooter and a moped is the absence of pedal.  Based on appearance, there is a close resemblance between an electric scooter and a motorcycle. To be able to use these electric scooters, one must obtain a license. This is particularly  true in countries like the Canada, the US, and many European nations. Most of the time, one is also required to obtain an insurance before  he can even use an electric scooter.

    The General Description of  Moped

The term ‘moped’ is coined after combing two words that are essential components of this vehicle – the ‘motor’ and the ‘pedal’.  This vehicle is, therefore, dependent on two forms of powers – conventional pedaling and motor. This characteristic makes it quite similar to e-bikes. However, the frame of the body is utterly different from the electric bicycles. Mopeds may come in either step-through or step-over  designs.  Mopeds may come in fuel tanks that are installed between the head tube and the saddle. They generally come with a ‘backbone’ frame similar to those of motorcycles.  Many usually get mopeds mistaken for motorcycles. To be able to use mopeds, one must obtain both a license and a registration. Mopeds are widely used in China, too. In the recent years, there has been an influx of  electric mopeds users in Europe as opposed to gas-powered mopeds.

    Electric bicycles vs. electric mopeds

As electric bicycles and electric mopeds are similar in their core components,  many often debate on which mode of transportation is better. While they are both economical to use, the e-bikes offer an added value as it allows riders to manually ride them. This is a massive plus for those who are after a healthier way of transport.  There is also a greater flexibility with the use of electric bicycles as riders may opt to use them in a number of places including sidewalks, bicycle lanes, parks, etc. In addition, as many states or countries do not require riders to have a license to use them,  it is easier and far more convenient to own e-bikes than mopeds.

From  the aspect of functional range, having an e-bike is also more advantageous. When the battery charge depletes, a rider can simply move to complete manual pedaling.  Many electric bicycles now also come in truly compact designs making them lightweight and extremely easy to transport. Modern models of electric bicycles usually come with apps where speed, battery life, and other essential stats can be monitored via a smartphone.

    Electric scooters vs. electric bikes

While many see e-bike as an healthier options, it cannot defeat electric scooters when it comes to range and speed.  However, both electric scooters and electric bikes are great for commuting and are both quite sustainable to use. On the other hand, electric scooters have become widely popular for commercial purpose. Many delivery services in  the biggest cities in China, for instance, are now using electric scooters to transport or deliver their goods to the clients. This cannot be easily done using a bicycle.  Many electric scooters also come in smart technology which enables riders to determine when their battery charge is about to be depleted. With the growing popularity of electric scooters,  you can now easily find some charging points that are strategically located.  Gone are the days when people need to worry about losing power in the middle of the road. Technology has made riding rather convenient for electric scooter users.

Another advantage of electric scooters over electric bicycles and mopeds is that they can be used by individuals  with specific medical needs. Electric power chairs or electric three-wheeled scooters are now used for medical purpose. These specialized electric scooters are designed to help those who have lost their mobility or limb function. While some of these electric scooters for a medical purpose are quite pricey, users may double check if insurance may cover their purchase.

    Final Words

It is a colossal advantage for many individuals of today’s era to have a wide range of electric vehicle options now. Choosing whether to purchase an electric bicycle, electric scooter, or  a moped highly depends on the purpose. If for personal leisure or hobby, a moped or an electric bicycle can be your option. If it is for daily commuting, business, or simply cruising around the neighborhood, an electric scooter can be an excellent option. Regardless of the option, it is good to highlight that using any of these vehicles means traveling contributing to harmful carbon emission.  If you intend to purchase any of these, prepare a checklist of points you need to verify including  quality of the battery, overall quality of parts,  speed and range, minimum age requirement and legal  driving requirements.  Lastly, take the time to read useful reviews on-line. Go ahead and learn more about electric bicycles, electric scooters, and mopeds, and be equipped with accurate information about them.

  • Are Electric Scooters For Adults Street Legal? – Electric Scooter

We live in a world where traditional fossil fuels are destroying our environment day in and day out. Keeping the earth’s atmosphere clean is a challenge all over the globe.

A good option for maintaining a green environment is an electric scooter, which does not burn fossil fuels for transportation. With growing awareness about environmentalism, many people are now opting for electric scooters rather than gas-powered vehicles.

But are electric scooters for adults street legal? Well, the answer is not straightforward. All vehicles are governed by federal, state and even local laws.

Driving an electric scooter may be legal in your state but may not be legal in your city. If it is legal in your town, then it may not be permitted on your college campus!

So, the answer is not a simple yes or no. This article will discuss the rules and regulations regarding electric scooters in various places in the United States. By the way, I also wrote a separate article on electric scooters legalization in London.

If your electric scooter satisfies these two conditions, most of the United States states allow your electric scooter in the streets.

But your electric scooter should have a good suspension system, tires and steering. In some states, the police will check whether your electric scooters have a rearview mirror, horn and lights to determine if they will allow your electric scooter on the road.

  • Specialized Electric Bikes: Mixing Fitness and Transport | Electric Scooters

Specialized has just released the newest edition to its Turbo electric bike lineup, the Specialized Turbo Vado SL. With “SL” which stands for Super Light, this is one amongst the lightest e-bikes in Specialized’s lineup, weighing in at 33 lb (14.9 kg). Mixing transport and fitness is the way to go thanks to Specialized electric bikes.

The New Specialized Turbo Vado SL

While a number of Specialized’s lightweight electric bikes have carried heavy price tags, the new Specialized Turbo Vado SL is shockingly light on the wallet. The company is preparing to position this new model in the market. It is only the tip of the iceberg on what is to come from the Specialized Turbo electric bike team.

Ian Kenny is the leader of Specialized’s Turbo e-bike brand described it best as the core match-up between transportation and fitness. The model represents a shift, a pivot that bends the principles of what the cycling industry has been willing to take on.

The Turbo Vado SL may seem like a fitness bike. But it’s also packing features that speak about its local transportation role. From the flat bars to rack and fender choices and integrated lighting. There is room for up to 42 mm tires on 700C wheels, or 47 mm tires if you go to 650B wheels. Those are practically fat tires by road bike terms. And there’s even front suspension hidden within the headset, giving the rider 20 mm of comfort on rough commuter roads.

The Turbo Vado SL could be a high-speed electric bike capable of 28 mph (45 km/h) of assisted speed, with a motor designed by Specialized to produce up to 240W of “continuous” power, more in peak usage.

    Electric Bikes by Specialized

The bike is made around an ultra-lightweight aluminum frame and magnesium motor mount. That SL 1.1 motor, which we have seen before on bikes just like the Turbo Creo SL and the Turbo Levo SL. Was made and designed by Specialized and weighs just 1.1 kg (2.4 lb) — around half the weight of most mid-drive motors.

The motor is intended to produce up to 200% of the rider’s pedaling output. And specific emphasis was put on programming the controller and motor to feel as natural as possible when it rolls on the power.

The idea is to keep the rider as the central unit of the bike and to keep the assist to a minimum. An assist system that does not detract from the ride experience that cycling enthusiasts find so important.

    Battery Units

An internal 320Wh battery is used to provide up to 80 miles (128 km) of range. A minimum of when used in Eco Mode.

Higher-power modes will reduce that range by a small amount. Though Specialized also offers a range extender battery that matches in one of two bottle holders and could add another 40 miles (64 km) of range. Bringing the max range up to 120 miles (193 km).

    Smartphone App on Electric Bikes

Specialized also offers a smartphone app called Mission Control that enables riders to customize a wide range of specs and controls on their bike.

In addition to basic telemetrics that several e-bike apps offer. Mission Control gives users more fine-tuned control, like adjusting the breakdown of power modes. For instance, if Eco Mode is not quite eco enough for a rider. He or she could actually adjust the amount of power that every mode can provide. Fine-tuning to the rider’s own desire.

The Specialized Turbo Vado SL is now available starting today from as low as $3,350. That is pretty pricey if you compare it to budget e-bikes. But it’s downright affordable considering other Specialized Turbo price tags we’ve seen. And considering that Specialized’s e-bikes are built to last for years of daily use. That is a good price, in my opinion.

    For Fitness or Transport

A mixed fitness/transport bike would be great for those who live in the city that want to downsize their footprint without limiting their choices.

It’s a widely known undeniable fact that e-bikes are one amongst the most effective  and efficient ways to roam around cities. But if you’ll be able to add some decent exercise into that equation too (and perhaps save on the gym membership). Then they become even sweeter and practical options.

People would question that 80-mile range figure, considering the Turbo Vado SL’s 320Wh internal battery. Which is not winning any biggest battery awards compared to the remainder of the industry. But with efficient pedal assist, that number is entirely doable. A 30-mile ride on a pedal-assist bike with a 180Wh battery would use half the battery. At that rate, an 80-mile range on a 320Wh battery of Specialized will suffice. For an ordinary rider that is not a powerful cyclist.

The last thing that is favorable with this bike is the price. At $3,350, the Turbo Vado SL actually starts near the lower end of Specialized’s price range. A wide range that notoriously shoots up pretty high once you get into their ultra-premium e-bikes. But this price also brings a high-end and light-weight multi-use e-bike into the range of hobbyist and enthusiast riders. Not just hardcore athletes.

    Social Distancing and Electric Bike

The Pandemic Lockdown in some World Governments is coming to an end. People are uncertain of their safety with the premature release from the lockdown. The contagion is still lurking and you are unsure if the person sitting beside you is free from the COVID 19.

Specialized Electric Bikes will fill the role in urban transport. It’s important that mass transit be limited to a specific number of individuals before health protocols are placed. The safest option is to ride healthy and free from those that may be carriers of the dreaded COVID 19. Our electric scooters and bikes are the answer to social distancing concerns in the field of urban transportation.
